CATHIE and David McMurchie from Rothesay won Bute Bowling Association’s MacRae Cup this week with a 22-13 victory over holders Liz McHugh and Iain Duncan in the final at Ardbeg.

After weeks of mixed pairs knockout competition involving players from Ardbeg, Rothesay and Craigmore, the 17-end final was a closely-matched affair early on, with singles exchanged over the first five ends to leave Liz and Iain trailing 3-2.

A run of 4, 2, 1 and 5 then saw Cathie and Davie surge ahead to lead 15-2 at the halfway point, and though Liz and Iain fought back with a 3 and a single, this was cancelled out by another four shots from their opponents at the next end to leave the score at 19-6.

Another single and a 3 from the Ardbeg pair reduced the deficit to nine with three ends to play, and an excange of threes over the next two ends did nothing to change the margin and left Liz and Iain with no choice but to concede defeat with one end to spare.

Association president John Gilchrist thanked Ardbeg for hosting the final before presenting the prizes and the MacRae Cup at the close of play.
