Ronnie McCrae of Ardbeg Bowling Club ended Rothesay’s stranglehold of the Bute Bowling Association’s gents’ competitions with victory in the Smith Cup singles final.

Ronnie looked to be on course for a convincing victory over Rothesay’s David McMurchie after opening up a substantial 20-10 advantage with 23 ends on the board, needing only one more shot to secure the trophy.

David, however, refused to throw in the towel and staged a superb fightback to close the gap to a single shot before, in the 30th end, Ronnie, runner-up in 2013 to Rothesay’s Donald McKellar, finally made it to the magic 21-shot mark.

The prizes and Smith Cup were presented by BBA president Hugh Yeamans at the close of play.
