Donald McKellar of Rothesay won Bute Bowling Association’s Smith Cup singles title with victory over Ardbeg’s Ronnie McCrae in a closely-fought final at Craigmore on Thursday.

The closeness of the match was reflected by the fact that the two finalists were tied at 3-3 after four ends, 8-8 after eleven and 11-11 after fifteen.

Donald looked to have made a break when he scored a three and a four to lead 18-11 at the close of the 17th end, but Ronnie fought back tenaciously to close the gap to a single shot before Donald scored two at the 23rd and last end to secure victory by a 21-18 margin.

Association president John Gilchrist presented the trophy to his Rothesay clubmate, and prizes to the two finalists, at the close of play.
