A week of top-quality bowls featuring players from all over Scotland and beyond reached a climax on Saturday with the finals of the Bute Bowling Association’s annual open tournament.

Sadly for the finalists in the ladies’ and gents’ singles and pairs, the tournament’s climax was played in thoroughly dismal weather, with steady rain falling throughout each of the finals at Rothesay Bowling Club.

But the elements didn’t make the smiles on the winners’ faces any less broad at the end of the day: the results of the four finals are as follows.

Ladies’ singles: Lawra Cox (Millport) beat Wendy Grant (West Kilbride) 21-16.

Gents’ singles: Stuart McInnes (Kirn & Hunter’s Quay) bt Peter C. Thomson (Rothesay) 21-9.

Ladies’ pairs: Violet Westland and Renee Speirs (Rothesay) bt Cathy McMurchie and Joan Reynolds (Rothesay) 14-9.

Gents’ pairs: John McGeorge (Thornliebank) and Tom Kennedy (Busby) bt Gordon Peacock and Brian Caird (Ardbeg) 15-10.
