Swimming: New ‘Bute Masters’ group is launched

A new adult swimming group aimed at better health, fitness, fun and friendship has been launched on Bute.

Bute Masters is the brainchild of island resident John Rushworth, who told The Buteman: “Masters swimming is basically swimming for adults. It encompasses the whole range of ability from casual fitness swimming to highly organised competitive swimming.

“Masters swimming welcomes everyone aged 19 and over, no matter what your reason is for swimming. How far you go with the Masters Swimming system is up to you.

“This all began in the USA in the 1970s when some formerly ‘elite’ swimmers organised a competition for adult swimmers. The sport has now spread all over the world.

“There is no push on swimmers to compete – in fact a major survey of British Masters swimmers showed that the majority of them rarely do!”

‘Masters’ swimming can be done at any level - from a quick dip in the pool to a swim with good company or the thrill of a competition.

“Some locals have shown an interest in all these aspects,” John continued, “and a Bute Masters group has been formed. For now this is an informal arrangement, whilst we build interest.”

To find out more, search for Bute Masters on Facebook or call John on 07754 277550.

“Given enough interest,” John added, “we intend, in time, to formalise it as an affiliated club to the Scottish Amateur Swimming Association Limited (known as Scottish Swimming) which is the national governing body for swimming in Scotland.”
