Strong island showing in Round Bute yacht race
JIM McILRAITH on Saboo was the overall winner of Isle of Bute Sailing Club’s 2012 Round Bute Race – but there were some notable performances among the Bute-based competitors in the popular annual event.
Brian Davidson was skipper of the first Bute-based boat to cross the finishing line on board Parallel Motion, although the day was especially notable for the sailing club’s own cadets, led by Adam Stirling, who won their class in Atalante.
Wind speeds were light in the morning, becoming calm around the middle of the day, which didn’t make things easy for the competiting crews, but the strength of the breeze picked up nicely in the afternoon.
Towards the end of the day, in fact, the phrase ‘blowing a hooley’ would have been appropriate – but that didn’t put off the crews, with the cadets in particular coping well with the increasingly tricky conditions.
