Shinty: Threadbare Bute well beaten in Kilmallie crunch

BUTE’s hopes of Premiership survival suffered a severe blow on Saturday as a team ravaged by injuries, holidays and prior commitments fell to a 10-0 defeat at the hands of an on-song Kilmallie outfit.

Last Saturday had originally been set aside by the Camanachd Association for Macaulay Cup action, with Bute due to face Oban Camanachd at Mossfield Park, and in addition to a lengthening injury list, several Bute players, knowing Premiership survival to be the top priority, were unable to play.

But the game’s governing body changed the fixture list due to Mossfield being unavailable last Saturday, meaningBute went into one of their most important league matches of the season severely under-strength - with the sadly inevitable result against a Kilmallie side boosted by a 3-1 win over Fort William in the Camanachd Cup seven days earlier.

The hosts found the net five times in the first 32 minutes and led 6-0 at half-time; Bute conceded two more early in the second period, but buckled down thereafter and limited the hosts to only two more goals in the closing stages.

“We had half a first team and half a second team,” coach Barry Martin told The Buteman afterwards.

“Don’t take anything away from Kilmallie - they played well, but they were able to play well.

“We had a better second half and actually had three or four decent chances, but we’d only conceded 15 goals all season before Saturday and that’s done a lot of damage to our goal difference.”

* This Saturday, June 16, Bute travel to Mossfield Park for their deferred Macaulay Cup quarter-final away to Oban Camanachd; throw-up is at 2.30pm.

* Bute’s second team are back in action this Saturday, June 16, with an away match against Glasgow Mid Argyll in the quarter-finals of the Bullough Cup.
