Shinty: Positives for Bute despite derby defeat

BUTE’S first team were unable to put a spoke in the wheels of the Premiership title bid by local rivals Kyles Athletic at Tighnabruaich on Saturday, with goals by Dunkie Kerr after 40 minutes and Gordon Whyte ten minutes after the restart giving the home side full points.

But in spite of falling to a 12th Premiership defeat of the season, there were plenty of good things for Bute to take from the game - the two teams were fairly closely matched throughout, and had Graham Fisher found the net with a first-minute shot things might have been very different for a Bute side including several second-team players, including James Dunn, Arran Dunn and Adam Stirling, who all played well.

Saturday’s result enabled Kyles to stay level on points with Newtonmore at the top of the table - although the Badenoch men have a game in hand - and keeps alive the Tighnabruauich team’s hopes of a double triumph, with the Camanachd Cup final against Inveraray at Mossfield Park in Oban coming up next month.

* This Saturday, September 1, Bute’s first team play their penultimate league game of 2012 when they host those Premiership table-toppers and reigning champions Newtonmore; throw-up at the Meadows in Rothesay is at 2.30pm.

* Bute’s second team game away to Aberdour last Saturday was cancelled as Bute were unable to field a team; the Fife club have been given the points.

This Saturday, September 1, Bute follow in the footsteps of their senior counterparts by making the short trip to Tighnabruaich to face Kyles Athletic’s second string; the game gets under way at the earlier time of 12 noon, as Kyles’ first team are due to play host to Kinlochshiel later in the day.
