Shinty: double disappointment for Bute teams
Action from Saturday's Marine Harvest South Division Two clash in Rothesay on Saturday between the Bute and Kyles second teams.
BUTE’S two shinty teams had a disappointing day on Saturday courtesy of a pair of 1-0 defeats.
Garry MacPherson’s 74th-minute penalty was enough to leave the Bute first team empty-handed at the end of their Orion Group Premiership match away to Inveraray; only goal difference now separates Bute from last place in the table after bottom club Kilmallie’s surprise 2-1 home win over Kinlochshiel.
At the Meadows in Rothesay, meanwhile, Bute’s second team saw their unbeaten home record in Marine Harvest South Division Two grind to a halt courtesy of Scott MacDonald’s goal for local rivals Kyles Athletic.
Both teams had chances in an open and entertaining first half, but Bute were unable to sustain their momentum after the interval and substitute MacDonald rattled home the winner with 19 minutes left after Matthew MacColl laid David Martin’s deep cross on a plate at the far post to seal Bute’s first league loss on home turf since August 2010 - when Kyles’ second team were also the victors.
Full reports on both matches to follow in the next issue of The Buteman, on sale on Thursday, May 10.
* Next Saturday, May 12, both Bute teams are in cup action: the club’s first team are away to Oban Celtic in the first round of the Artemis Macaulay Cup, while the second team play host to Aberdour at the Meadows in the first round of the Bullough Cup.
