Shinty: Bute unable to halt ‘More title charge

A brave performance by Bute’s first team wasn’t quite enough to derail Newtonmore’s bid to retain their Premiership title on Saturday as goals by Ackie MacRae and Callum Stewart earned the Badenoch side a 2-0 win at the Meadows.

Bute - still looking for their first league win of the campaign - made an encouraging start to the game, but were soon coming under pressure from a Newtonmore side who went into the match tied with Kyles at the top of the table.

MacRae gave the visitors the lead midway through the first half when he snapped up the rebound after Bute keeper Kevin Queen blocked a shot with his chest, but Bute battled back into the game and were still very much in with a shout at half time.

The hosts made a strong start to the second half, too, with Robert Walker and James Dunn both coming close, but Newtonmore weathered the storm and secured full points when Stewart found a way past Queen with ten minutes left.

* Bute’s second team weren’t in action on Saturday; their away game against Kyles Athletic was postponed after it was decided the home club’s Tighnabruaich pitch would not be able to cope with two games in a day.

The Kyles first team’s Premiership tie against Kinlochshiel was therefore given priority, and the hosts took full advantage, coming from a goal behind to win 3-1, thereby keeping their own Premiership title hopes alive.
