Shinty: Bute’s cup final dreams are dashed
Bute's Tom McMillan gets the ball past a Ballachulish defender during Saturday's Bullough Cup tie - but the visitors had the last laugh, winning 3-0 to book their place in the final against Lochside Rovers.
Bute Shinty Club’s second team saw their hopes of reaching their first cup final since 2008 comprehensively dashed as a clinical Ballachulish side chalked up a 3-0 win in Saturday’s Bullough Cup semi-final at the Meadows.
Darren Sutherland gave the visitors the advantage in the 11th minute when he followed up after his initial shot was blocked to lash home the opening goal from 20 yards.
And Bute’s hopes suffered a further blow when Duncan MacDonald fired home Ballachulish’s second goal from a similar distance two minutes before the break.
Those two goals apart, the first half had actually been a pretty even contest throughout, but the visitors’ touch in front of goal proved crucial - and Ballachulish sealed their place in the final when Sutherland drilled home his second on 74 minutes after Bute keeper John Whitelaw mis-hit a clearance straight to Sutherland’s team-mate Roddy MacLean.
Bute’s second team have no fixture next weekend.
