Shinty: Bute fall to ‘Derby Day’ defeat against Kyles

RODDY MacDONALD scored on the stroke of half-time to give Kyles Athletic a 1-0 win over Bute in the sides’ Orion Group Premiership ‘Derby Day’ clash in Rothesay on Saturday.

MacDonald’s goal - a well-struck low drive from a Roddie McLeod corner - was no more than the Tighnabruaich side deserved, as Bute keeper Kevin Queen pulled off several excellent saves to prevent the visitors extending their advantage.

Bute’s best goalscoring opportunities came in the second period, with Robert Ferguson and David Whitelaw coming close just after the restart before Roberto Zavaroni had a low drive well saved by Kyles keeper Kenny MacDonald midway through the half.

But Queen was without doubt Bute’s outstanding performer, with a full-length diving save to deny David Zavaroni the pick of half a dozen fine stops by the Bute goalkeeper.

Bute’s second team, meanwhile, had to settle for a share of the spoils after a 3-3 derby draw at home to Col-Glen in Marine Harvest South Division Two.

Roddie Middleton fired the hosts into the lead with his first goal of the season five minutes before half-time, but Cairn Limbert levelled in the first minute of the second half with a shot from distance which deceived Bute keeper John Whitelaw.

Tom McMillan put Bute back in front when he snapped up the rebound after a Middleton shot was saved, but the visitors levelled again through a Norman MacDonald strike on the hour.

Ruairaidh Soane’s long-distance effort gave the hosts the advantage for a third time, but Col-Glen refused to give in and Limbert drilled home his second at the back post on 72 minutes to earn his side a point.

* Next Saturday, June 2, both Bute teams are away from home: the club’s first team travel to Spean Bridge to face Lochaber in the second round of the Scottish Hydro Electric Camanachd Cup, while the second team take on Ballachulish at Jubilee Park in Marine Harvest South Division Two.
