FORMER Rothesay Academy pupil Jane Ross is preparing for her first involvement as a stand-by player for the Team GB women’s football squad at the Olympic Games - being kitted out in the British Olympic team apparel.

Jane, who plays for Glasgow City, is the only Scot among four reserve players named alongside the 18-strong main squad, which itself only features two Scottish players.

Jane will join up with the Team GB squad on July 9, and could be involved until August 9 if the team makes it to the final of the competition.

The first Glasgow City player - and, as far as we know, the first person from Bute - ever to be an Olympian, Jane will enjoy everything that many athletes can only dream of, as she gets to part of arguably the greatest sporting event in the world.

Following the kitting-out session, the squad will head to the Olympic athletes’ village to begin preparation and training before their first practice match, a friendly against Sweden at the Riverside Stadium in Middlesbrough on July 20.

The team’s first official Olympic match will be against New Zealand at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on July 25.

They will then face Cameroon at the same venue three days later, before their third and last group game, a glamour tie against Brazil at Wembley on July 31.

The quarter-finals, should Team GB qualify, will begin on August 3.

Commenting on her selection, Jane said, “I am very pleased to be included as one of the four reserve players for the Team GB Olympics squad. To be involved in the Olympic Games in London this year is the opportunity of a lifetime and it is an experience that I am greatly looking forward to.”

After Jane’s Olympic involvement comes to an end, she will jet back to join the Glasgow City team as they prepare to head off to Helsinki for their UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifiers against Finnish champions PK-35 Vantaa, Croatian champions WFC Osijek and Moldovan champions FC Noroc Nimoreni, all due to be played between August 11 and 16.
