Golf: Thomas surges ahead in Summer League battle

LEIGHTON THOMAS took a big step towards adding the Bike Shed Summer League title to his growing list of successes when he surged to the top of the table after a superb performance in the fourth round of Bute Golf Club’s stableford tournament.

The 12-handicapper left the field trailing in his wake as he found winning form again with a score of 44 points - nine clear of Richie More (10) in second place on 35 points - while Sandy Long (20) was third with 31.

* Richie Smith was another player who found top form last week when he produced his best round of the season to win the Greenkeepers’ Benefit medal competition on Saturday.

A net 63 playing off 17 gave him a two-shot victory over nearest rivals John Kernaghan (11) and Ian McDougall (21), who both scored 65.
