Golf: Richie back on top step at Kingarth

Richie Smith returned to the winners’ rostrum in the latest round of Bute Golf Club’s Winter League at Kingarth.

The 19-handicapper improved on an earlier victory last month by producing his best golf of the stableford tournament so far with an impressive total of 44 points.

Smith dropped only three shots to par over the first nine holes for an outward half of 25 points and, despite a no-score at the 11th, followed up with a creditable tally of 19 for the inward half to finish one point ahead of Robert McKirdy.

Overall league leader Ian McDougall now has an 11-point advantage over his nearest challenger, John Kernaghan, at the top of the standings after seven rounds of the competition, in which the eight best scores posted over the winter months count.
