Football: Brandanes slump to Rhu defeat
Rothesay Brandane’s wretched away run in the Caledonian League continued with a 3-2 defeat against bottom-of-the-table Rhu Amateurs on Saturday.
Neil Whitelaw’s first-half penalty and Wes Pattison’s second-half strike couldn’t prevent the Danes slipping to defeat against a Rhu side who played more than half the match with ten men – though the islanders themselves finished a man short after James Sprowl also saw red.
David Faulkner’s brace put Rhu 2-0 up well before half time, although Whitelaw reduced the deficit from the spot, and the Danes were boosted further when a Rhu man was sent off for aiming a kick at Sprowl after he tried to stop his opposite number taking a quick free kick.
But Faulkner completed his hat-trick four minutes after the restart, and though Pattison reduced the leeway for a second time, Sprowl’s second caution of the afternoon dealt a crucial blow to the Danes’ hopes of taking something from the game.
