Curling: Rulebook thwarts Bute’s Dumfries Cup bid
BUTE’S curlers were left cursing the rulebook after their old rivals from Millport snatched the Dumfries Cup in controversial circumstances this week.
The two Bute rinks thought they had wrested the trophy from the Cumbrae club’s grasp by totalling 15 shots to their opponents’ 14 after the two clubs won one game apiece in Sunday’s contest at Ayr ice rink.
Howver, much to Bute’s consternation the rulebook was called in and Millport insisted on the number of ends won being the deciding factor, as per the Royal Caledonian Curling Club’s rules, rather than shots won as is the Argyll Province practice, resulting in Millport retaining the trophy for another year.
