Cricket: South stars as Bute return to form
CHRIS SOUTH was the outstanding performer as Bute County returned to winning ways with a 70-run victory over a weakened Hughenden side in the Lords WDCU Championship on Saturday.
South shrugged off an elbow injury to steady the Bute innings with a quick-fire 33 en route to a total of 156 all out, before taking a wicket with his first ball and then making a stunning one-handed catch to send Hughenden’s most stubborn batsman back to the pavilion.
Bute recovered from the early loss of opener Richard Harding for just one run, with captain Mark Crichton putting on a partnership of 34 with Alan Peacock and going on to reach a solo total of 38; South’s innings included five fours and a six before he sportingly walked after edging the ball, despite being given ‘not out’ by the umpire.
Fifty-six extras took Bute’s total to 156, and against a Hughenden side who travelled with only nine players Bute’s bowlers wasted no time in their pursuit of victory; only I. Redmond put up any significant resistance, reaching 26 before he was out to South’s superb diving catch. The visitors were eventually all out for just 86.

This Saturday, June 2, Bute’s WDCU campaign continues when they travel to Gourock Park to take on Inverclyde.
