THE Rothesay Bowling Club triple of Dino Zavaroni, David Reynolds and David McMurchie lifted Bute Bowling Association’s Easton Triples trophy after defeating Craigmore in Thursday evening’s final at Ardbeg.

Rothesay’s three Ds surged into an early lead, taking two, three and five shots at the first three ends to open up a 10-0 advantage, and though the Craigmore triple of Matthew Williamson, Hugh Yeamans and skip Phil Kirkham kept plugging away they always faced an uphill struggle to eat into their opponents’ comfortable lead.

Four shots for the Craigmore trio at the tenth end reduced the gap to seven, but by then Rothesay already had 14 shots on the board, and over the next two ends they increased their lead to 11 shots.

A three at the 13th end took Craigmore’s tally into double figures, but Rothesay immediately answered with four more shots of their own to open up a 22-10 lead, prompting Craigmore to concede defeat before the final end.

Bute Bowling Association president John Gilchrist presented the trophy to his Rothesay clubmates at the close of play.

Attention now turns to the BBA’s annual open tournament, involving players from all the island’s clubs as well as a large number of visitors to the mainland, which begins this Sunday, August 12, and concludes with the finals at Ardbeg on Saturday, August 18.

The last BBA inter-club tournament of the season is the over-60s singles competition for the Stonehaven Cup, the final of which will be played on August 23.
