Bowls: Ardbeg rink secures McMillan Fours title

JIMMY GILMOUR’S Ardbeg rink lifted the Bute Bowling Association’s McMillan Fours trophy with a 15-7 win over Rothesay on the Ballochgoy green on Thursday evening.

Jimmy and his team-mates Andy Williamson, Gordon Peacock and John Preston got off to a bright start against the host club’s rink of Victor Zavaroni, Jock McKirdy, David McMurchie and skip Donald McKellar, taking singles at three of the first four ends.

The Rothesay rink, however, hit back, taking singles at the next three ends to edge in front by a 4-3 margin.

From then on, however, it was almost all Ardbeg: the visitors levelled the match with another single at the eighth end, but then went on a run of 2, 3, 1 and 2 to open up a 12-4 lead going into the 13th end.

Rothesay briefly rallied with a two and a single to close the gap to five shots, but by then Ardbeg’s momentum was too much for the home rink to cope with and a single and a two in the final two ends secured the victory in style.

BBA president John Gilchrist thanked Rothesay for hosting the final and paid tribute to those who came along to watch the game before presenting the trophy and prizes to the winners.
