Leighton Thomas and John Kernaghan were successful in the delayed final of the James Gill Memorial Cup, held recently.

Leighton Thomas added a fifth trophy to his silverware collection this season when he and partner John Kernaghan were successful in the delayed final of the James Gill Memorial Cup on Sunday at Bute Golf Club.

The pair defeated Robert McKirdy and Steven Neilson by one hole in the greensomes tournament after they had taken the lead with a Kernaghan birdie putt at the 17th.

It had been an evenly matched tussle over the preceding holes with never more than a one-hole advantage to either side.

The success gave Kernaghan a match-play double as he added the Gill Cup to an earlier victory in the W. D. McFarlane Memorial foursomes trophy in which he had partnered McKirdy.

* The fifth round of the Winter League on Saturday ended in a three-way tie for top spot with Robert McKirdy (6), Peter Martin (26), and Sandy Long (24) all scoring totals of 38 stableford points.

McKirdy needed an impressive finish for a share of the lead with birdies at the 17th and 18th holes to give him the leading scratch score of 72.

Stuart Wilson (12) and Leighton Thomas (9) were one point behind the leaders with scores of 37 points. However the most remarkable performance of the day came from Graham McArthur (6) who beat par five times in a rollercoaster round of birdies and bogeys which produced only 35 points.

The competition scratch score was 65 (39 stableford points).

The sixth round of the tournament, sponsored by Stephen Thomas of Optimize Financial Solutions, Ltd., takes place on Saturday with the usual 8.30am ballot at the clubhouse.
