One of the final big competitions of the 2016 season at Rothesay Golf Club took place on Sunday with the playing of Inter pub Trophy, sponsored by Heineken.

Apart from some isolated rain showers the playing conditions were as good as we have had all season.

In a change this year from the normal medal round, the competition was played as a stableford with the winning team comprising of Iain White, Ryan McKirdy, Stephen Reynolds, A.Smith (jnr), Rory McEwan and Iain Simpson (capt) representing the Grapes Bar, winning with a points total of 153 for their four counting scores.

Runners up was the Mac’s Bar team of John McBride, Andy Docherty, Stan Gaston, George Hanson (capt), Bobby Liddell and George Reynolds with a total of 149 points.

Third place went to Rothesay Golf Club 1 comprising of Gilbert MacKay, Angus Murray, Gary Steele, Tommy Duncan, Donnie McArthur and Frank Lee (capt) who also scored 149 points but lost out on the fifth counting score.

The individual winner with a two under par round of 67 giving him total of 42 points was Rory McEwan.

Four players scored 40 points with Jimmy Crawford coming second and Gary Morrison in third.

Stevie McDonald won the scratch prize and the unlucky player to miss out apart from some sweep money was Richard Dunn.

The nearest prizes were won by Michael Murty (4th), John McBride (8th), J Webster (11th), Leighton Thomas (13th), and Gary Morrison (18th).

The committee would like to thank Heineken for their sponsorship and Billy Leckie for his role as starter.

Another trophy presented on the day of the inter pub was the Iain Haig Trophy which was won by Jimmy Ewing with a superb 72 less 10 net 62.

Second was Tommy Kilpatrick, and in third was Gary Morrison.

A raffle in aid of the Heart Foundation raised around £400 pounds and a big thank you goes to all those who donated prizes and bought tickets. A special mention, however, must go to Frank Lee who allowed us sell raffle tickets at his recent retirement function which was held at the club.

This coming weekend we have a charity event on Saturday in memory of Louise Pearson who was a keen golfer and member of the club for many years.

The competition is a medal round for ladies and gents, and all the money raised on the day will be going to the Ardgowan Hospice.

Sunday, September 11 is the Mac’s Bar Open with entries being taken by George Ross at the Mac’s Bar.
