Graham McArthur made the most of the calm after the storm last Saturday when he scored a level par round of 68 for a three-point victory in Bute Golf Club’s Winter League.
Play could only go ahead following sterling work by greenkeeper Bobby Speirs to clear large stones, shingle and other debris from the shore greens after they had been lashed by waves in the storm of the previous day.
McArthur produced a blast of his own over the closing stages of the first nine holes as he fired in birdies at the seventh and ninth to score 33 to the turn for 22 stableford points. The six-handicapper followed up with a steady back-nine of 35, dropping his only shot to par at the 16th, finishing with a total of 42 points.
Leighton Thomas (11) and David Bryden (10) were joint second with scores of 39 points apiece while Richie More (10), who had the only two of the day at the third, was fourth on 37 points.
