A stirring fight-back by captain Steve Neilson and partner Graeme Connor helped secure the Burnside Trophy for Bute Golf Club at Kingarth on Saturday in their annual social match with Port Bannatyne.

The pair were five down after nine holes against Robert Turnbull and John Black when Neilson’s birdie three at the 10th triggered a remarkable recovery which saw the Kingarth duo go on to win the next four holes, squaring the game with three holes remaining. A par at the 17th by Connor put them ahead and a half on the last green resulted in an unlikely victory.

Earlier Graham McArthur and Henry Tait put Bute on the road to success with a 7 and 6 win over Roddy Shaw and Iain MacLeod in the opening game. Then club champion Robert McKirdy and Peter Martin edged the home side into a commanding position when they followed up with a last-green victory over Mike Ivory and Jim Thom.
