Former Bute rugby players dominated the top places in this week’s rounds of the singles and pairs Winter League competitions at Rothesay Golf Club.

Angus Murray and Michael Murty were joint top scorers in Saturday’s singles round with 40 stableford points apiece, while Murray kept his good run going into Sunday when he partnered Colin Spear to top place in the second week of the pairs competition.

Murray and Spear, making their Winter League debut, edged last week’s winners, Andy Docherty and Jason McKay, into second place on a countback after both pairs scored 42 points, each comprising 21 points on both the outward and inward nine.

Both pairs owed their scores in part to playing in the best of the day’s weather, with the best score of the wetter and windier afternoon session coming from Hughie Charker and Billy McFarlane, who scored 40 points.
