Newcomer Henry Tait was celebrating his first trophy win as a member of Bute Golf Club at the weekend when he lifted the Sir Harry Hope Cup.

The former Rothesay player, who joined the club only a few weeks ago, won by the narrowest of margins thanks to a second round net 62 in his opening tournament at Kingarth.

The 14-handicapper edged John Foley (13) into runner-up place on a better second round after both players finished with an aggregate of 132, with two scores counting from three returns.

Robert McKirdy (5) who led the field going into the final round could not improve on his tally when, despite scoring three birdies, including a two at the 12th hole, he could only equal an earlier score of net 68 to finish in third place.

Top players in the three-round competition with two scores counting were: H. Tait (70, 62) and J. Foley (66, 66) 132; R. McKirdy (65, 68) 133; G. McArthur (66, 68) 134; Steve Neilson (69, 66), D.
