Golf: McBride makes most of calm Kingarth conditions

Only John McBride was able to take full advantage of the calm conditions which prevailed for the first time in several weeks for the latest round of Bute Golf Club’s Winter League at Kingarth.

Despite the lack of wind on Saturday, competitors did have to cope with the additional hazard of an early frost: a challenge evident from scores which, in the main, improved significantly over the second nine holes as the welcome morning sun gradually eased the problem.

McBride (12) achieved his best performance of the tournament with a tally of 41 points – 22 of which were scored on an inward half that included a birdie three at the 16th.

Andy Docherty (8) and Leighton Thomas (10) were joint runners-up with 39 points apiece; defending champion Robert McKirdy (5) shared fourth place with Tommy Burke (15) after both players finshed with 35 points.
