Golf: Holder off to a flier in Bute inter-club trophy

Liam Shanks made a dream start to his defence of the M&M Trophy with a superb net 61 in the first round of the 2013 tournament at Port Bannatyne Golf Club on Sunday.

Shanks, who powered his way to a ten-shot victory in the 2012 contest, finished four shots clear of the rest of the field in the opening stage of the battle for the much-sought-after trophy, played annually between members of each of the island’s three clubs, with one round at each course.

Next best were the net 65s posted by the Rothesay quartet of Tommy Reynolds, Stuart Robertson, Angus Murray and Willie Glen.

Round two of the competition takes place at Rothesay tomorrow (Wednesday, May 8), with the final round over Bute Golf Club’s Kingarth course on Sunday, May 12.
