Golf: High fliers brought low in Port’s Winter League

Port Bannatyne Golf Club’s reigning Winter League champions Liam Shanks and Jim Muldoon got the defence of their title off to a stuttering start after falling to a 2 and 1 defeat at the hands of the new pairing of Ian Shaw and Francois Lintermans on Sunday.

Liam and Jim weren’t the only high-flying duo from last season to be brought low by a new pair on Sunday either – Graham Fisher and Ian McFarlane, runners-up in 2011-12, fell victim to Steven Officer and David Greer by a margin of 3 and 2.

A third new partnership to catch the eye was that of Robert Jardine and Mark Crichton, who defeated Jimmy Dunn and Ron Nicol 2 and 1.

But not every new pairing enjoyed a successful first foray in the competition - total newcomers Chris South and Robert Durrant were shown no mercy by John Marshall and Jim Bicker, who bade them ‘welcome to the Winter League’ with an 8 and 6 margin of victory.
