The outcome of the Rothesay Motor Services Winter League at Port Bannatyne Golf Club should become clearer after the final round of qualifying fixtures this Sunday, February 24.
Only one of the 21 pairs taking part in this year’s competition is already guaranteed a place in the knockout stages - Craig McFarlane and Liam Shanks are the only twosome certain of a quarter-final spot, having sealed their passage with a 4 and 3 win over Jim Thom and Gordy Macintyre in League B on Sunday.
The other qualifying places in League B will be contested by Ian Shaw and Francois Lintermans, Pete Barnett and John Maltman, and the father-and-son pairing of Hector and David Whitelaw.
In League A, Robert Jardine and March Crichton lead the way, with Jack Paterson and Jamie Jardine, Graham Fisher and Ian McFarlane and Brian MacKillop and John Preston also in the running, though the latter pair have only an outside chance of making it through.
League C is topped by Jim McKirdy and Bobby Cassidy, with three other pairings - David Reid and David Driver, Jim Bicker and John Marshall, and Roddie Shaw and Sam Jamieson hoping to secure one of the two automatic quarter-final placings.
Only the top two in each league are guaranteed a place in the top eight, with the last two slots to be filled by the two third-placed pairs with the best records.
