Hotel chef Richie Smith served up a winner on Saturday when he produced his best golf of the season to lead the way in the latest round of Bute Golf Club’s Winter League.
The 21-handicapper returned a net score of 60 for a stableford tally of 44 points which gave him victory by a point from his nearest challengers - and earned him a two-shot handicap cut to 19.
Leighton Thomas (9) and John McBride (11) had to settle for a share of second place after excellent rounds of gross 70 and 72 respectively for 43 points apiece. Thomas had birdies at the fourth, fifth, ninth and 16th on his way to his best competitive score over the Kingarth course, while a consistent performance from McBride produced one sub-par score at the fourth.
The lowest scratch return was achieved by Graham McArthur with level-par 68 for 42 points, while Robert McKirdy’s one-over-par 69 included a remarkable eagle two at the 10th, where he holed his nine-iron approach shot.
