Rothesay harbourmaster Steven Neilson cruised to victory last week in the highly successful Seniors Open tournament at Bute Golf Club.

The 19-handicapper, who is captain of the host club, scored net 62 to finish three shots ahead of his nearest challengers to secure the Burnside Bowl in his first open success. It also brought the winner a handicap cut of two shots.

A better inward half gave Hugh Charker (12) of Rothesay Golf Club second place with a score of net 65 which was matched by Bute’s Graeme Connor (13).

The excellent field of almost 50 competitors found the extended and improved Kingarth course an exacting test with the competition scratch score increasing to 67, three above the standard scratch score.

The lowest return of the day was a four-over-par 72 by Rothesay one-handicapper George Reynolds who took the scratch award.
