Golf: Bolton secures Argyll and Bute matchplay title

Bute Golf Club’s Graham Bolton secured his seventh Argyll and Bute matchplay championship and 16th overall Argyll and Bute title with a surprising win in the opening event of the 2015 area golfing season at a cold and windy Machrihanish links.

Bolton defeated Greg Watson of Dunaverty 3 and 2 in a scrappy final on Sunday, clinching victory with pars at the tough 14th, 15th and 16th holes to take the title five years after his last triumph in the event.

Bolton had beaten Rothesay Golf Club’s George Reynolds in a tight semi-final, while Watson booked his spot with a last four defeat of Millport’s Craig Pirie.
