Matthew Leitch’s goal was the only crumb of comfort for Bute YFC’s under-16s on Saturday as championship-chasing Shawbridge Thistle eased to a 4-1 victory in the island club’s last game of the season.

The Glasgow team, who had won a thrilling encounter 7-5 when the teams last met seven days previously, led 2-0 at half-time, and though Bute played really well in the second period, they were caught out by two more goals from the visitors.

Leitch, however, made sure Bute would have the last word when a long, hopeful clearance by his brother Ryan in goals was misjudged by Shawbridge’s number 20, allowing Bute’s top scorer to slot the ball between the legs of the onrushing keeper for his 43rd goal of the campaign.
