Bute YFC’s under-16s marched into the last eight of the Renfrewshire League Cup on Saturday with a dramatic 3-2 extra time win at home to C League leaders Quarriers United.

The hosts shrugged off the loss of Max Allan to take the half-time lead through a fine half-volley from Ronan Officer, but Quarriers came roaring back after the break and won a penalty within ten minutes of the restart - only for Bute keeper Ryan Leitch to pull off a fantastic save.

Leitch’s stop, however, only delayed the inevitable, and Quarriers duly levelled after a questionable decision by the referee not to give offside against the visitors’ winger.

And it looked like curtains for the hosts when Quarriers’ number nine made it 2-1 with five minutes to play.

But a formation change in the last few minutes paid off when Scott McAlister nicked a last-gasp leveller to force the tie into extra time.

The winning goal came five minutes into the first period, with McAlister notching his second of the game to give Bute a measure of revenge for the 3-1 defeat suffered when the sides last met on league duty in October.
