Heavy rain ended any hopes of live football and shinty action in Rothesay on Saturday.

As had been widely expected, the opening game of the season for Bute Shinty Club’s first team, against Lochside Rovers at the Meadows, was an early victim of the wet weather, the South Division One fixture being called off on Friday afternoon.

It was joined on the ‘match postponed’ list by Rothesay Brandane’s Caledonian League game against Cambria, which was called off on Saturday morning due to a combination of a borderline-unplayable pitch and an ‘amber alert’ on the Rothesay-Wemyss Bay ferry service due to high winds.

Bute Shinty Club’s second team, however, did beat the weather - they travelled to Musselburgh on Saturday to take on Tayforth in the opening round of games in South Division Two.
