Rothesay Brandane maintained their push for promotion from the Caledonian League’s first division with a comfortable home win over the league’s bottom club on Saturday.
The game only just got the go-ahead after a late pitch inspection following heavy rain beforehand, but once proceedings got under way the Danes wasted no time in making the points all but safe, with James Sprowl and John McBride finding the target within 60 seconds of each other before veteran defender Neil Whitelaw made it 3-0 to the islanders with just eight minutes on the clock.
Sprowl’s second just before the half-hour made it five and club captain Stuart McKechnie further extended the hosts’ lead from the penalty spot before Chris Lawrence added a sixth from a McBride cross.
William Bordon dashed the Danes’ hopes of a clean sheet when he pulled one back, but a looping McKechnie free kick caught out Symington keeper Alan McCartney to give the home side a 7-1 interval lead.
With the points well and truly tied up it was perhaps no surprise that the second half was a quieter affair, though without several good stops from McCartney the hosts could have hit double figures before the hour mark; as it was, only two more goals were added in the second period, with McBride’s second on 78 minutes making it 8-1 before McKechnie rounded off the scoring just before the end with his second penalty of the day.
Included at the end of this slideshow of action shots from the game is a brief video clip of the Danes’ ninth and final goal, McKechnie firing past McCartney from the penalty spot to confirm the Danes’ biggest win of the season.
