Rothesay Brandane’s preparations for the 2014-15 campaign moved up a gear on Saturday as the local side lost 7-1 at home to Drumchapel Amateurs in their first pre-season friendly.

Despite the margin of the defeat there were plenty of encouraging signs for the Danes’ new joint player-manager Neil Whitelaw, in charge of the side in the absence of his newly-appointed coaching colleague Stuart McKechnie - the most notable being the appearance in the squad of no fewer than eight players from the former Bute Youth Football under-17 squad.

Ryan and Matthew Leitch, Duncan and Craig McLean, Max Allan, Lex Elliott, Kalum Ledicott and Ronan Officer all got a run out during the course of the afternoon, with keeper Ryan even saving a first-half penalty - and though all eight found the step up from youth to amateur level a testing one, once the group have adjusted to the pace of the adult game they should be a positive addition to the Brandanes’ squad.

The home side’s only goal was scored by Gary McGregor midway through the first half, the centre-back driving the rebound into the bottom corner of the net after his free kick was blocked by Drumchapel’s defensive wall.
