Chris Lawrence scored four goals on Saturday as Rothesay Brandane continued their impressive start to the season with a 5-2 home win over Rhu Amateurs.
Having been docked three points for fielding an ineligible player in the previous week’s defeat of Weir Recreation (click on the link to the right of this article for the full story), the Brandanes were keen to record their first official victory of the new Caledonian League first division campaign - though things didn’t get off to the best of starts for the islanders when Rhu opened the scoring with just four minutes on the clock.
Lawrence, though, levelled matters after half an hour - though the hosts had a narrow escape when Rhu missed a penalty when the scores were still at 1-1.
Eddie Lench put the hosts in front after 56 minutes, and Lawrence’s second four minutes later increased the Danes’ lead - but Rhu hit back after being given their second penalty of the afternoon midway through the second period.
The home side, though, weathered the storm and Lawrence completed his hat-trick in the 82nd minute to re-establish the Brandanes’ two goal lead, before putting the result beyond all doubt with his fourth and his team’s fifth two minutes later.
