Stuart McKechnie hit a late equaliser to earn Rothesay Brandane a 1-1 draw away to Strathclyde University in their opening match of the 2012-13 Caledonian League first division campaign on Saturday.
McKechnie’s leveller eight minutes from time was no more than the Danes deserved after a fine second-half showing against a Strathclyde side relegated from the Caley’s Premier Division at the end of last season.
On a pitch as close to perfect as any you’re likely to find in amateur football, having been used by both Spain and the USA for training during their Olympic campaigns in between matches at Hampden Park, the home side enjoyed the best of the first half, and Strathclyde’s number nine opened the scoring ten minutes before the interval with a 25-yard shot into the bottom corner after waltzing past three Brandanes defenders.
But the visitors came into the game more in the second half, and Jordan Selkirk struck the post ten minutes from time before McKechnie brought a fine move involving Paul Toop, Chris Lawrence, Selkirk, John McBride and Chris Donnelly to a successful conclusion with a right-foot shot into the top corner of the net.
