Former Rothesay Academy pupil Jane Ross hit a hat-trick for Scotland’s women against Australia in the Cyprus Cup tournament on Monday - but the Scots still missed out on a place in the final by the narrowest of margins.

Jane’s treble, which began with two goals in two minutes around the half-hour mark and was completed thanks to a Jo Love assist on 70 minutes, added to an early strike by Lisa Evans to give the Scots a 4-2 win in Larnaca.

But as the players left the pitch, word filtered through that France had scored with the last kick of the ball against the Netherlands in Nicosia to pip the Scots on goal difference after both sides finished with seven points in Group B.

France will now take on England in the final, while the Scots will face South Korea on Wednesday to decide who finishes third and fourth in the tournament.
