Football: Bute exports impress on the big stage

Bute’s two biggest footballing exports caught the eye on Sunday thanks to a pair of impressive performances, with Jim McAlister impressing in Dundee’s first SPL win of the season and Jane Ross hitting a first-half hat-trick for Glasgow City.

Jim, formerly of Hamilton Accies and Morton, has put in a series of fine displays since his move to Dens Park on the eve of the new campaign, and again played an instrumental role in midfield on Sunday as the Dark Blues bounced back from their surprise cup defeat to Queen’s Park last midweek to beat Hearts 1-0 at Tynecastle.

Jane, meanwhile, opened the scoring for City after just five minutes of their SWPL fixture away to Aberdeen, and went on to complete her hat-trick before half-time, when she was replaced by Emma Mitchell.

Both Jim and Jane took the first steps on their footballing careers at the Rothesay classes run by local coach Jim Ross, formerly of Ayr United, Partick Thistle and Kilbirnie Ladeside, who was given a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s Birthday honours list in June for his services to young people on the island.
