Rothesay Brandane AFC travelled to Eaglesham on Saturday to play their first match of the new season in the Caledonian League Division 1A.
An away game against a very experienced Eaglesham team was always going to be difficult, as they were ahead of the Rothesay team in terms of match fitness with three cup ties already under their belt.
As expected, Eaglesham were on the attack from the get-go, and put the Brandanes’ defence under pressure with some good football, moving the ball very quickly.
After five minutes the Danes were caught out with a cross from the right wing which landed in their net from an Eaglesham player standing on his own at the back post. The Brandanes’ mid-field tried hard to get their team back into the game.
But it was Eaglesham who scored again with a copy of the first goal - a cross from the right - which was headed into goal this time by the home team’s left winger. Eaglesham were well on top and it was no surprise when a third goal was scored in the 36th minute.
A long ball from a home team defender went over the top of the Danes’ defence and the number 10 ran through to score.
The second half began with the islanders determined to do better.
The pace of Wes Pattison, Sean and Chris Lawrence was starting to give Eaglesham a few problems. Eighteen minutes into the second half the Danes pulled a goal back.
Pattison ran clear of the Eaglesham defence only to be brought down with a last ditch tackle just as he was about to score. Last year this would have been a red card but after a new rule change it’s now just a booking.
Sean Lawrence stepped up and sent the Eaglesham keeper the wrong way from the penalty spot. The Brandanes had the best of the second half, but could not find the goal again, and Eaglesham ran out 3 – 1 winners.
On Saturday, September 3, the Brandanes are at home to Westerlands in the Caledonian League Division 1A. Kick-off is at 2pm at the Stadium Park in High Street. All players should report no later than 12.45pm.
