A young Rothesay Brandane team lost 4-1 away to Dalziel HSFP in their opening League Cup group fixture as the new Caledonian League season got under way on Saturday.

The Danes found themselves 2-0 down to last season’s First Division champions at the interval, with new keeper Ryan Leitch pulling off three fine saves to prevent the Lanarkshire men adding to goals in the 24th and 36th

minutes.

The islanders, with several former members of Bute Youth Football’s under-17 team in their ranks and BYFC coach Roddie Leitch in charge on the sidelines, gave themselves hope when Wes Pattison pulled one back early in the second half, but within four minutes the home side made it 3-1, and a fourth late on put the icing on their

cake.

The other game in the Danes’ group on Saturday saw top flight Milton ease to a 7-1 win at home to perennial First Division strugglers Symington Tinto.

* The Danes have no game this Saturday, August 23, due to the Bute Highland Games. The locals’ next League Cup group game is away to Symington on August 30.
