Rothesay Brandane coach Roddie Leitch says it may be a while before his new-look squad adapts fully to the rigours of amateur football.
Leitch, who took over as the Danes’ coach at the start of this season after four years leading Bute Youth Football’s team to under-17 level, spoke to The Buteman this week about a challenging start to the island club’s season.
The new-look Danes have only played three games so far, all of them cup ties and all ending in defeat - though according to Leitch, playing unfamiliar opponents hasn’t helped.
“We’ve not really been able to get our heads round our best starting XI yet,” he said.
“Too many players - and this isn’t a criticism - are only available every second week due to work commitments.
“We thought last season’s squad of 18 would all come back this year, which would enable us to bed in our under-17s gradually, but that hasn’t really happened and we’re having to field five of the seven former youth players from the start every week, which doesn’t make things easy.
