Bute Golf Club’s Leighton Thomas defends the Middleton Cup on Sunday first when players from throughout the island and beyond will compete in the Kingarth Open.

Thomas, who is enjoying a run of good form with five club victories in recent competitions, is bidding for his third win in four years in the event.

And the tournament will have a new main sponsor in Weldsafe, the welding and safety supply company of Glasgow, who have boosted the prize fund which will include a £100 voucher for the best net score.

Weldsafe director John Bunyan, a past-captain of the club, said: “We are delighted to be associated with the Kingarth Open to ensure the continued success of this popular tournament.”
