Defending champion Robert McKirdy takes a six-point lead into the final round of Bute Golf Club’s Winter League competition this Saturday.
The six-handicapper now looks favourite to retain the McArthur Cup after a weekend when none of his immediate challengers managed to close the gap on the league leader.
McKirdy has a total of 316 stableford points from eight counting scores; John McBride remains second on 310, with Leighton Thomas third, two points further adrift.
But it was David Coll who hit top form in last Saturday’s round with a winning tally of 41 points.
The 12-handicapper set himself up for victory over the first nine holes with a one-over-par 35 for 23 points, and held things together on the inward half to finish three clear of the field.
Although the silverware is probably out of reach, Coll’s performance boosted his overall total by seven points to 304 which puts him in joint fourth place in the table.
Steven Neilson (16) and Peter Martin (26) finished joint second on Saturday with 38 points apiece, while other leading scorers were Graham McArthur (6) and Leighton Thomas (11), both on 36.
The leading league placings are: R. McKirdy 316, J. McBride 310, L.Thomas 308, G. McArthur and D. Coll both 304, J. Thom 301, P. McDonald 300, P. Martin 292, D. Bryden 284, R. More 270.
The tournament, sponsored by Stephen Thomas of Optimize Financial Solutions, Ltd., will conclude on Saturday with the usual 8.30am clubhouse ballot.
