Bute Golf Club captain Steven Neilson splashed his way to a remarkable victory in the rain-lashed Winter League on Saturday at Kingarth.

The 16-handicapper was one of only a handful of players who braved the atrocious weather for the latest round of the stableford tournament.

Despite the waterlogged conditions Neilson secured a birdie two at the third hole on his way to a score of 37 at the turn for 23 points. He held things together over the back nine for a winning tally of 40 points.

Leading placings in the competition, sponsored by Stephen Thomas of Optimize Financial Solutions, Ltd., are: Robert McKirdy and Leighton Thomas both 302: David Coll, Graham McArthur and Jim Thom, all 297; Pat McDonald 292; and Peter Martin 275.
