There were birdies galore in the Winter League at Bute Golf Club on Saturday as competitors made the most of Kingarth greens in superb condition following recent intensive maintenance.

Eight players in the field recorded 23 sub-par scores at 11 holes - including five twos - on a day of remarkable scoring despite strong southerly winds.

Scratch golfer Graham Bolton topped the birdie table with a tally of six while other players who beat par were Graham McArthur with five, Donald Standaloft (three), Robert McKirdy (two), Leighton Thomas (two), John Kernaghan (two), with Andy Docherty, Duncan Speirs, and Ritchie Smith all getting one apiece.

Ironically top scorer Robert McBride, playing off 14, was denied a birdie in an otherwise solid round of 78 for 40 points. Bolton shared second place with six-handicapper McKirdy on 38 points while Kernaghan (14) and Speirs (7) each scored 36 points.

The tournament, sponsored by Stephen Thomas of Optimize Financial Solutions, continues tomorrow (Saturday) with the usual 8.30am ballot at the clubhouse.

* The club’s annual dinner and presentation of prizes will be held at Kingarth Hotel on Saturday, November 15, at 7.00pm for 7.30pm.
