A superb birdie at the difficult 11th hole set up John McBride for a winning score of 40 stableford points last Saturday in the latest round of Bute Golf Club’s Winter League.
After scoring 21 points to the turn, and safely securing par at the 10th, the 13-handicapper fired his approach shot through a fierce westerly wind to within six feet of the pin before successfully holing out for a sub-par three.
As the wind continued to strengthen over the closing holes McBride stayed on track thanks to successive pars at the 16th and 17th to finish six points clear of the field.
Leighton Thomas (11) and Mike Whaley (20) shared second place on the 34-point mark with Richie More (10) and David Bryden (10) one point further adrift.
The competition, sponsored by Stephen Thomas of Optimize Financial Solutions, Ltd., continues tomorrow (Saturday) with the usual 8.30am ballot at the clubhouse.
